A Word from Our Founder
Turning the big "50” next year is monumental for me. Not just because I will be half a century old, gulp, more like I remember on my 25th birthday thinking I had not done much with my life, nor did I have a degree, abandoned by my husband, left with two small children and just a year before was on Welfare. I said to myself "what a loser." It did not matter that I had served 4 years in the Navy had big dreams and my mother lived with my family. Since then, my mother has passed on at the age of 52, I have a Bachelor's degree, and I earned a Master's degree as well. I have three amazing children who are living their adult lives admirably, four grand babies who are my life yet who am I?
My son went off to college and I moved to find myself in San Diego during 2012. I spend half my time in SD and the other half in Phx. NAS North Island was my first duty station and at 19, I promised I would return to give back to this city that changed my life 25+ years ago.
My first six months, I lived downtown, in a loft basically with the homeless. I became one of the “lost generations” who were my age to Advocate through COHH.org. I learned the whys, the how comes, and their way of life. I provided meals, training, showers, clothing, storage, music and video production opportunities with the help of so many women. I stood by them when security threatened to have them arrested and trash their belongings. And one day I understood my purpose.
Once again, I reflected on my life--this time around, my cup runneth over with gratitude. It was not always like this. I grew up in foster homes, group homes and homeless. I was 15 when I enrolled at the Job Corps in Oklahoma. I had the same tape playing in my head, even though I was so young. I remember one particular incident that has always stuck in my mind and makes my heart heavy with sadness. As foster children, we know we are not part of a family. My foster parents made it very clear, not by words but by actions. Separating us from their children, we ate different foods and when it was treat time, we shared an ice cream cone amongst us. This was my experience in the system. During our first Christmas together, the family photographer was setting everyone up for the family Holiday card. He took one photo of all of us then he was instructed to separate me from the others. He said he would take photos of just me. It never happened. I share this part of my life, because I was “Camera Shy.” Actually, I am traumatized by that experience and never felt worthy or pretty enough to be in front of the camera. I became the smart one, the focused one, and the athlete.
Years later, I found myself behind the camera. I started a company to help women find true love with online dating. I provided makeovers, styling, and a photo shoot, except I did not know how to use a camera. I was terrified. Once I learned how to use a 35mm, I was hooked. What I did learn and accepted from myself was looking through the camera lens, the true meaning of empowerment and accepting my life--just the way it is.
With photography, it is like a do over and over and over. A photographer can take many photos and pick that one perfect photo. Kind of like life when you mess up, you fall down, pick yourself up, square your shoulders and get your do over. With videography, a videographer has to trust her instincts if you are shooting live. No do over. Yet, the most rewarding for me. I have learned to trust myself, my gut instinct, when there is danger, and what is real. I received the gift of “Trust.”
Trust is what we share with our clients. Trust in us to ensure our clients are flawless with their appearance, convey their story, be confident and feel “Sexy.” I don't believe there is a woman out there who tells their media team to just wing it and don't care how they come across on camera. Women want to be confident, bold, and beautiful to their audience just not every woman would say it out loud.
While learning my craft, I had several mentors who happened to be men and a few women. What I noticed was the difference between the photographers. I witnessed ladies photos being taken from behind, bending down, and other compromising positions. I also noticed the event photos were not the most flattering. I made a note to myself that when I was behind the camera, I would not publish any unflattering photos or video. I learned to snap emotion, capture the moment and a woman's best body angles depending on her build. I transferred these skills to video production.
I asked myself often what makes Media PRO different from a point and shoot video set? What is it that real women want and need to be video and media ready? One day, I was observing a sharp, classy, and professional entrepreneur timidly asking questions during our Creative Session and the many reasons NOT to be on video. After our session, she took a deep breath and said, "I know I need videos. I trust you. You are the expert." During the screen test, our team could see the confidence in our client grow. At the end of the shoot "It's a Wrap" during the finale production, this same woman was disappointed it was over. She conveyed how easy, fun and not intimidating like she thought it would be. Never mind there is a full crew tending to her every need, and whim (chocolate strawberries and Mimosas (over 21 only). Upon delivery of the video, we could see the transformation. We are only successful and a job well done when our client calls and emails regarding the results she receives through our videos. I have received many calls and we have numerous testimonials, on video of course. We have produced over 300 videos, not bad for a visionary. This is why I created Media PRO Productions and what makes us different, unique and focused.
